Celebrate Life, Love & Family | A Year in Review 2010

December 26th, 2010

I’ve been preparing for this post for a while now. Just after Thanksgiving it hit me, its been almost a year. Almost a year since I picked up my first DSLR. Almost a year since I decided to take a leap of faith. Almost a year since I’ve been living my dreams. When I started [...]

I’ve been preparing for this post for a while now. Just after Thanksgiving it hit me, its been almost a year. Almost a year since I picked up my first DSLR. Almost a year since I decided to take a leap of faith. Almost a year since I’ve been living my dreams. When I started on this journey it seemed like there was infinite space ahead of me, almost like a black hole. I wasn’t sure what was going to amount from this experiment. I didn’t really know if I could be “good enough” to keep up with the billions of other photographers in LA. I didn’t know if I could survive in a business by myself. But as December comes to a close, I can’t deny that I’ve come a long way. In my opinion success is measured by happiness, which means I’m doing pretty darn good! I am beyond excited for 2011. Cheers to the new year!

Here’s a stroll down memory lane…

Chiara’s 3rd Birthday. My very first shoot. I was excited, and nervous, and completely exhausted by the end. I have never seen so many children running around in circles. And these were children from the school I where I was teaching at the time. Definitely felt like being thrown in the lion’s den.

Monique. I told Monique I wanted to practice shooting techniques. I didn’t let her put on makeup, we ended up shooting for 2 hours, then I put the images on my blog. She wasn’t happy, but can you blame me!? Some people just don’t know how naturally beautiful they are.

Jeff’s 40th Birthday. Julie discovered I was a photographer at Chiara’s party and enlisted me for her husband’s surprise party on the spot. The details of this party were absolutely fabulous and I’m still planning to do my own version of the shindig for my hubby in a couple of years.

The Photog Shootout. My first crack at weddings in the most appropriate setting- a workshop. I loved this experience and got some great images from it as well!

Laura & Billy’s wedding. Many of you remember the creativeLive Jasmine Star webcast I attended in Seattle. This was a surreal experience which really helped to launch my career. This image was so special to me, because of the 7 photographers shooting this wedding, I was the only one with this image.

Cerina is an aspiring entertainer. She’s a magnet to the lights, camera and action. We decided to do portrait style head shots to highlight her true personality, youth and beauty.

Yvette wanted portraits to commemorate her last year in her 20′s. She and her husband were planning to start a family around this time and Yvette actually found out she was pregnant a week after we took these photos! I still get chills!

Madden’s christening was the beginning of my sweet tooth. My sweet tooth for photographing baby cheeks, and lips, and fingers and toes…

Sonny and Maggie’s wedding was my first wedding I booked for myself and shot by myself. It turned out great, but I will never try to be Superwoman again.

Tracy and Cameron are my photo BFFs. But that only happened after we had a fun and fabulous engagement session at our alma mater CSUN. I’m so grateful to know wonderful people.

Mia Natalia was just 3 weeks old when we did her newborn session. Just after this shot Mia was introduced to the pacifier for the first time and we had a calm quiet baby. But I’m so glad I got this shot first!

Karly’s 6 month photos were definitely of the experimental nature, but she was very patient throughout the entire process. I love how pure this image feels.

Aneesah’s portrait session was a party! For real. There was music, drinks, fabulous shoes and accessories all over the place. It was like a small glimpse into my future studio space. :)

Aneesah_231

The Hill’s Family session was a last minute, just before Thanksgiving dinner race to find good light. It was difficult, but we got a few keepers.

Nina and AJ’s wedding. I was the second shooter for this wedding, but I stylized a few shots for my own portfolio. I like using chairs and sofas as props, but by far this is my favorite sofa ever!

The last event of the year was the Shootsac holiday party. I might try to make it a tradition to shoot a holiday party at the end of every year.

Thank you for joining me on this journey and I wish everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous 2011!

A Christmas Surprise for S. Miller Photos!

December 24th, 2010

I know I claimed I was on vacation as of yesterday, but let’s be real, when you own your own business you’re never really on vacation. My trusty Blackberry keeps me in the know… and you know what I found out yesterday?  My images were featured in the Shootsac newsletter!! Now for the non-photographers this [...]

I know I claimed I was on vacation as of yesterday, but let’s be real, when you own your own business you’re never really on vacation. My trusty Blackberry keeps me in the know… and you know what I found out yesterday?  My images were featured in the Shootsac newsletter!! Now for the non-photographers this may not sound like a big deal, but actually its a huge deal! Remember when I was comparing photographing the party to my big Grammy moment? Well this is like winning an award too. I’m beyond excited and I had to share my little 15 seconds of fame with you all here!

Thanks again to Jessica Claire and the Shootsac team for a fabulous shindig (and product!).

Celebrate Life | Shootsac Holiday Party

December 21st, 2010

At first I was nervous about volunteering to photograph the Shootsac holiday party because everyone who was going to be there was a photographer. What if I did something wrong? Were people going to critique me on the spot? What if everyone’s camera phone images turned out better than mine?? See the pressure I was [...]

At first I was nervous about volunteering to photograph the Shootsac holiday party because everyone who was going to be there was a photographer. What if I did something wrong? Were people going to critique me on the spot? What if everyone’s camera phone images turned out better than mine?? See the pressure I was under? But then I thought about it, I know what I’m doing and what could really happen that could possibly ruin my career? Nothing. I started to think of it as my big Grammy performance moment. The moment I dreamed of since I was a little girl. Except with a camera instead of a microphone. I still had doubts on the way, like at about the 2 hour mark of my commute down to the OC on a Friday afternoon… and the tree hour mark when I was really regretting the large lemonade from Hot Dog on a Stick that I downed just before hitting the road.

Jessica Claire hosted this year’s party at her home. Besides being a fabulous photographer and the inventor of the Shootsac, she also gives Martha Stuart a run for her money. I want to be Jessica when I grow up. Seriously, I don’t know how she has time to make her home took like a page out of Elle Decor on top of everything else. But I’m not complaining, there were lots of yummy details for me to capture! My fav! Even if it does take me 3 hours to get down to the OC, I’ll probably make the Shootsac party an annual tradition. Especially if SoCal Santa comes back to visit! Click here to see who was on Santa’s naughty and nice list!

****UPDATE: I’m officially calling it a VACATION! I will be away from the computer for the next few days so if you’d like a copy of your image please visit my online gallery. Merry Christmas to all and HAPPY SUNSHINE!!

Celebrate Love | Long Beach, California Wedding {Nina & AJ}

December 21st, 2010

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of second shooting a wedding at the Ebell with Charla of Charla Blue Photography. It was sort of a last minute thing, but sometime the most wonderful things happens last minute. And this was one of those occasions. Charla is such a laid back person, just like [...]

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of second shooting a wedding at the Ebell with Charla of Charla Blue Photography. It was sort of a last minute thing, but sometime the most wonderful things happens last minute. And this was one of those occasions. Charla is such a laid back person, just like me and there is nothing better than working with someone who  just gets it. Not to mention the bride and groom were also totally cool, score! I had so much fun at this wedding. To see all the details click here, to see the moments in between scroll on…

December Daily 1 – Stephanie 0

December 14th, 2010

So I guess the December Daily thing was a little ambitious. Throw in a few meetings, holiday traffic, holiday parties and sick days and what do you know I’m a little behind on this daily blogging challenge. Like a week behind. So of course I’m feeling like a I let the internet down, but I [...]

So I guess the December Daily thing was a little ambitious. Throw in a few meetings, holiday traffic, holiday parties and sick days and what do you know I’m a little behind on this daily blogging challenge. Like a week behind. So of course I’m feeling like a I let the internet down, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it, then today this was in my email. Lawrence Chan of Tofurious offers great business advice to the photography world, and today Lawrence’s blog post is just what I needed to read. Clearly, I needed a break.

So while on “break” I photographed the Shootsac Holiday Party

baked cookies for all the delivery people who know my address by heart

and purchased some amazing shoes fit for a celebration photographer

maybe “breaks” aren’t so bad after all…

December Daily- Day 7

December 8th, 2010

“Every woman should have a photo shoot once in her life.”  Were the words Yvette shared after she received the images from her session back in September. My thoughts, that’s great publicity for me! But now I know what she meant. I’ve been in front of the lens before, but never like this. I decided I [...]

“Every woman should have a photo shoot once in her life.”  Were the words Yvette shared after she received the images from her session back in September. My thoughts, that’s great publicity for me! But now I know what she meant. I’ve been in front of the lens before, but never like this. I decided I wanted to have portraits done for a possible website, and Ashleigh Taylor was a doll to help me out. I had this grand vision of sequins, confetti and balloons… you know celebration type stuff. So I ordered a sequin skirt and shirt, I found a sequin headband and I was on the hunt for super tall shoes with a big bow. Then I realized I was DOING THE MOST. I nixed the balloons, confetti and Barbie shoes and ended up with a look that perfectly captured who I am. The girl who sees a party even in the dullest moments. I have to admit, I didn’t know what to expect. It was one-on-one and I didn’t have the ball. So like every other good little subject, I listened to directions and tried not to show my fillings when I smiled. So I just picked up my disk from my mailbox today and I ditched the rest of my errands and ran home to see the images. I looked at maybe the first five and suddenly had the most overwhelmingly good feeling of being beautiful. So now I agree with Yvette even more. Every woman should have a portrait session at least once in their lifetime to remind ourselves that we are beautiful, even when we don’t see it.

December Daily- Day 6

December 6th, 2010

“Joy… Finding happiness when things don’t go your way.” My Sundays are filled with joy. My alarm goes off at 6:30. I’m out the door by 7:45…AM. I’m sleepy, cold, sometimes suffering from a photography hangover (just for clarification, a photography hangover has nothing to do with drinking…at least for me it doesn’t) but by [...]

“Joy… Finding happiness when things don’t go your way.”

My Sundays are filled with joy. My alarm goes off at 6:30. I’m out the door by 7:45…AM. I’m sleepy, cold, sometimes suffering from a photography hangover (just for clarification, a photography hangover has nothing to do with drinking…at least for me it doesn’t) but by 8:30 I’m full of joy. I’m talking dancing, singing, laughing and playing. JOY. Sunday is the only day I force myself to wake up to the horrid sound of an alarm. But I do it, because I know the reward. Ok, so now you’re asking why do you do this? I volunteer with the children’s ministry at my church. And even though there are days I would rather pay someone to go for me while I stay in my warm bed, I get up for those kids. Each month we discuss a virtue with the kids. This month it’s joy… fitting.

Speaking of kids, here is one cuuuute little flower girl from a wedding I attended. She only spoke Italian and she did her job very precisely… one petal at a time.

December Daily – Day 5

December 5th, 2010

In the past few weeks, I have experienced community to it’s fullest magnitude. The photography community is in one word, amazing. I know most of my photo-friends through Twitter, but slowly I’m getting to know each one more personally. Most of my family and non-photo friends don’t get it. Twitter that is. So I try [...]

In the past few weeks, I have experienced community to it’s fullest magnitude. The photography community is in one word, amazing. I know most of my photo-friends through Twitter, but slowly I’m getting to know each one more personally. Most of my family and non-photo friends don’t get it. Twitter that is. So I try to explain it, Twitter is like my office. The people I follow and the people that follow me are like my co-workers.  When I have a question, whether it be about equipment, technique or dinner options. My tweeps answer. When I need a good laugh, my tweeps got my back. And when any of us needs some support, you can count on an overwhelming response of retweets. And like a proud mama, I gotta take a second to brag that everyone I’ve met is just as nice in person! I’m so blessed to be doing what I’m doing alongside all the amazing photographers out there. I can’t wait to share about some of the real life collaborations and meet ups with my virtual office mates. Here’s a little sneak…

Today’s post isn’t inspired by a photograph, but rather my new blog background. Before you roll your eyes, let me explain. I am approaching my first anniversary as a photographer and now more than ever I am evaluating my business; the logistics, the image and the amount it reflects ME. Its important for my web presence to reflect me as a person as well as a business person and artist. Well this mini facelift is just what the doctor ordered. When I thought about this I considered 3 words: texture, tone, and gold. I love gold. Just so you can see some of the madness that took place while choosing the new design here were some contenders…
